Reed Hastings wymyślił ideę i wystartował Netfliksa w 1997 roku. Wtedy największym graczem w dziedzinie wypożyczania filmów wideo na fizycznych nośnikach była firma Blockbuster. W 2004 roku, w szczycie rozwoju Blockbuster zatrudniał 84 tysiące ludzi na całym świecie posiadając 9 tysięcy placówek. 

W 2010 roku firma zbankrutowała. Blockbuster nie umiał zobaczyć się w rzeczywistości w której ludzie oglądają filmy online bez konieczności chodzenia do wypożyczalni.

Netfliks w 2002 roku zadebiutował na giełdzie. W 2011 roku Hastings jasno określił kto jest jego nową, bezpośrednią konkurencją: "The goal is to become HBO faster than they can become us".

Netflix wart jest 100 mld$ (dla porównania Spotify idący na giełdę wyceniany jest tylko na 19mld$). Disney kupuje Hulu, Amazon i Apple deklarują miliardowe budżety na produkcję własnych treści a przecież w są jeszcze YouTube i Facebook.

Przepis na sukces? 7 mld dolarów wrzucone na stworzenie szeregu seriali i filmów a to wszystko zaplanowane za pomocą danych pozyskanych na podstawie obserwacji widzów. I szybkie "zabijanie" projektów, które nie rokują.

Netflix wprowadził możliwość oglądania całych sezonów ciurkiem ("binge") co okazało się idealne dla ludzi przyklejonych do internetu i komórek - nikt już nie chce czekać tygodnia czasu na kolejny odcinek przygód swoich bohaterów. Chcę oglądać tu i teraz.

Podczas ostatnich nagród Emmy Netfliks zgarnął aż 20 statuetek (tylko HBO miało więcej bo 29). Serwis obsługuje 109 mln subskrybentów użytkowników zlokalizowanych w 190 krajach.

HBO w lipcu 2017 deklarowało, że zbliża się do 3,5 mln subskrybentów usług cyfrowych.
